Nano - yes or no?

I have a whole 4.5 hours to decide whether or not I shall participate. I have once before and I wrote exactly 1000 words before my mind rebelled and wouldn't let me go any further. Super lame.

I have a whole lot of ideas going on and honestly, it would be good to take a break from Jenna and just ruthlessly pound out 50,000 words. I really do want to do it.

There are two things stopping me though. One, I never can turn that inner editor off. I just can't keep writing if I know I've made some royal screw up. It just bugs and bugs and bugs me until I go back and fix it. The second reason, and probably the most important, is my wedding is on the 1st of December. As it gets closer I'm sure I'm going to be getting a whole lot more stressed and because of the holidays I'm taking, I need to make sure everything at work will keep running without me. BUT I will be finished uni.

So have any of you guys done Nano before and if so, care to share any secrets with me? And do you vote yay or nay on the whole giving it a go thing? I really hate to lose so I just don't know how I'm going to handle it...

AND last but not least. Books have been sent to everyone who emailed me - don't forget to let me know what you think :)

    1. That is so true. Everyone who does Nano is so helpful and lovely. Can't hurt to try.

  2. Go for it. It's supposed to be fun, and the support from everyone else is inspiring.

    1. The thing is, I any have fun if I'm losing. I'm way too competitive with myself for that. It's stupid, I know, but that's the only thing holding me back.

  3. Well, I joined at the last second, too. Now, I'm doing 3 projects this month and my cup is full and overflowing!

With the help of the workshop, maybe you'll make it through all the way to the end!

    1. Wow you're going to have a busy month, mine is nothing in comparison!

And it was actually your workshops that prompted me to do it :P

  4. I did NaNo ONCE. BUT.
I didn't blog during that time, I didn't have other hobbies or commitments to stop me from doing it, and it took ALL my out-of-work time attention. I think that... if you have an idea you're passionate about and you WANT to do it, have fun :D

I think what Donna said :D

Just... don't overtax yourself. Do what's right for you. It's not about 'winning', it's about having fun and challenging yourself :)

    1. I might just do some kind of unofficial Nano. It's been a while since I blogged as it is so I really don't want to give that up and this whole wedding thing is going to take up a fair bit of time.

  5. So, I'm really sad at the moment because I started writing a really long reply (as I always do) aaaaand... I lost it -_____- Time to start over and see what I can salvage from memory!

Um... there was me saying I felt the same way as you when it comes to NaNo, agreement that the inner editor is an evil little creature, wedding planning is probably crazy but I wouldn't really know...

AH YES! And that's when I got to my point. It's really up to you and what you think you can realistically accomplish. I know that 1,667 words a day doesn't sound like too much, but with everything else going on in your life, you need to think really hard about whether you can do it.

I'm not trying to sound negative in any way. I just think that you should realistically know how your time is going to be spent and how much of it you'll have to spare.

But, playing devil's advocate, if you know you're going to have the time, do it! I've heard it's an amazing, really fun, and supportive experience, and if I end up doing it too, we can be NaNo buddies!

(Oh gosh, I probably scared you off the whole idea with that last line. LOL.)

Anyway, so just think really long and hard about it, okay? And tell me what you decide, because I'm sure you'll make the choice that's right for you :)

    - May :)

    1. Why is it always your comments that disappear? Odd. I think I'm going to do an unofficial Nano and see where that takes me but we can still be Nano buddies :)

    2. Haha, this time it was actually my fault. I pressed the back button or something while I was typing the comment out. Whoops :$

Anyways, that's actually what I was going to do! I'm graduating high school this year, so my mom and I were talking about whether I should focus more on my grades or have me try to balance it out. The compromise was that I start it out for the first week or so, see how I'm doing, and then figure it out from there.

  6. How I look at it is, you KNOW you can't win if you don't try. If you try, you have a much better chance to win. And with your competitive nature an even better chance to win. :)

Good luck with all the wedding stuff too! :)

  7. I did Camp Nano in August, and actually got on better than I thought I would. It is hard though, and I didn't have time to do much else! I say if you want to do it, do it. It doesn't matter if you give up half way, at least then you tried :)

  8. Oh that inner editor! You have to lock her up and make sure she doesn't get out :)

It's my first NaNo year, so I'm not sure how it'll go, but I'm hoping for the best. :) Worth a shot, right? We'll do it together!
